This windfarm of 4,000 windmills on the California coast 90 miles east of Los Angeles, was built as an alternative power source during the energy crisis of the 1970′s. Although many have worn out and are now replaced with more modern wind turbines, this collection of windmills has proven itself to be a useful source of energy, powering surrounding desert communities including Palm Springs.
The facts are that operating with a wind speed averaging 13mph, each windmill produces 300kw per hour of wind power.
These windmills cost approx $300,000 each and are maintained with local and state subsidies.
