Not only is there the possibility of becoming totally independent and or off the grid, but also the amazing sense of completion when you rely on only yourself for power upon the completion of your own DIY alternate energy homemade wind turbine.

Also as greenhouse gasses and global warming continues, in comparison to the emissions from coal and gas powered plants, a homemade wind turbine as your  home power source , reduces your carbon footprint and ho is a small step on the way to creating a greener planet.

Why wind?  Well it is a free resource and is available to more than 90 percent of the country.  (tall buildings and geographical features permitting).   Building a home made wind turbine  is relatively simple and the cost is a lot less than many people think.

The main component of the project is a structure to mount the blade on, a tail to keep it pointing into the wind or breeze, and gearing to turn the generator unit to convert the kinetic energy into electricity.   Knowing that this is pretty much all it is now makes it sound a whole load more simple doesn’t it?

For most, the best option to proceed will be to purchase a Homemade Wind Turbine Kit, with all of the components ready for self assembly, usually this will take just a few hours.  There are however a few things to consider first, Where will you locate it?  The higher the better of course was once the only way of thinking, however now with more modern blades and light weight materials a lower lighter unit is also feasible.    Don’t forget to check with your local by laws to be sure the structure you are putting up is “legal” in your area.

How far away form your neighbours does it have to be?  Well again check with your local council, however with the newer style wood and composite fibre blades creates far less vibrations & noise than the older counterparts.

Don’t restrict yourself to just a freestanding tower.  Roof mounting is becoming very popular, and is more than achievable by your average DIY alternate energy Enthusiast.  Keep in mind that using recycled materials can also help reduce the environmental impact of your turbine, but be sure to keep the blades away form anything that might get in their path!

Attaching a tail assembly to keep the unit pointing into the wind is literally a breeze, (pardon the pun) once the general wind direction has been determined.   When starting out, you should be able to find a local wind map online or via your local weather beuro, however a homeowner serious about wind energy will get your own wind meter to record the local levels to determine the best spot in your yard to collect the wind.

Erecting the unit, and attaching the turbine, gearing and generator are quite easy tasks for the DIY alternate energy enthusiast.  The wiring however and possible battery storage systems may be better suited to a local electrician, and especially if you are sending energy back into the grid for rebate or credit.

When thinking about using a battery to store your energy, also think about where you might put such a battery.  A small outdoor shed with a concrete floor will do the job best, solid, secure, however also out of your living environment. Batteries however are the drawback, as finding the most energy efficient that is still environmentally friendly to dispose of is a hard task still these days.

So for anyone with a bit of DIY flair, and a set of tools and ingenuity should be able to have a homemade wind turbine up in no time.  Whether it be from a prefab kit, or a set of plans to create your own, you should be flying solo from the wind in a very short and achievable time.
