Devastation in Japan – and Nuclear Radiation Possible
Our hearts and thoughts go out to all those in Japan caught up in the recent earthquake and tsunami. We are no match for the power of nature, both positive and destructive. And the damage to some of Japan’s power stations is another terrifying reminder that it is impossible to plan for every eventuality and possible aftermath. The level of Japanese preparedness in the event of earthquakes and tsunamis is greater than that of any nation, and that may have saved countless lives. Yet the speed and destruction of such a huge tsunami as shown in many BBC videos leaves me quite numbed , wondering about the fate of people in cars struggling to speed away from the wall of water threatening to overwhelm them. Now that several nuclear plants have been confirmed as affected, the threat of radiation is very real. There is no energy solution that could have withstood such an onslaught, and the misery of many in the immediate and surrounding areas is now compounded by not having enough electric power to manage every day living.
